Sheer Sound's Tales of African Folk focuses on the more contemporary sounds of the genre. Echoes of Western singer/songwriters, Brazilian troubadours, and gritty urban folksingers breeze through strong cuts from legendary Angolan singer Bonga's "Kianje," Ras Sheehama's gentle "Shoshela Oshaile Shava," and Shiyani Ngcobo's bright and traditional-sounding "Udadewetha." Tales of African Folk may contain a few misses, but its eclecticism keeps it fresh, fun, and occasionally heartbreaking.
