Mickey Rooney stars as Danny Brady, a well-meaning garage mechanic who falls for a waitress named Vera (Jeanne Cagney) who destroys his life in less than a week. In order to pay for his first date with Vera, Danny takes $20 from the cash register at his job, with the full intention of paying it back in a couple of days. When the accountant show up at his hob the next day, Danny scrambles to replace the missing cash. He buys an expensive watch on credit and then pawns it to raise the money he needs. But a detective catches him and threatens to throw him in jail unless he pays for the watch in full. Desperate, Danny steals the wallet of a drunk. Vera's slimy ex-boyfriend (Peter Lorre) finds out about the robbery and blackmails Danny into giving him a car for his silence. Danny steals a car from his job to appease Lorre, but is then caught by his boss who demands to be repaid. Vera and Danny rob Lorre's arcade to raise the money. But when Vera spends her portion of the money on a new fur coat - Danny doesn't have enough to repair his boss - who calls the police.
