Premium Rush brings the bloated action movie genre down to a human scale--specifically, the lean five-foot-ten frame of Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who plays Wilee, a New York City bike messenger devoted to his brake-free fixed-gear bike. When Wilee is given a slim envelope to deliver from his girlfriend's roommate, he suddenly finds himself inexplicably pursued by a crooked cop (Michael Shannon,Take Shelter, in fine malevolent fettle). The whys and wherefores are gradually revealed as the movie jumps back and forth in time in between gripping chase scenes on the streets of NYC.Premium Rush's action is all the more thrilling for being so very low-tech; as Wilee weaves in and out of aggressive traffic, narrowly avoiding disaster, nerve-rackingly vulnerable in a helmet, a red T-shirt, and shorts, it's impossible not to anticipate the feel of pavement against his all-too-human flesh. Some of the dialogue is a little overwrought, but it hardly matters. This movie is all about kinetic energy and it delivers. Also featuring Dania Ramirez (Entourage), Aasif Mandvi (The Proposal), and Jamie Chung (Sucker Punch).--Bret Fetzer
