When these two get together with their buddies in the Longview sextet, they deftly explore the bluegrass tradition of crisp picking and ensemble singing. On this 1999 record, however, they tone things down a notch to pay homage to brother duos like the Blue Sky Boys and the Monroe Brothers, acts that formed a vital bridge between old-time mountain music and its spruced-up bluegrass descendant. Connell's smooth lead vocals and Rigsby's passionate tenor harmonies blend effortlessly as the pair runs through a program filled with off-the-beaten-track tunes from the Monroes, Bolicks (Blue Sky Boys), and of course, the Stanley Brothers, who clearly remain Rigsby's main inspiration.
