Curtis Mayfield’s legacy is enormous. As the main man of The Impressions, he’s recorded some of the finest soul vocal group music of the ‘60s; he’s also helped pioneer funk and soul music. Not just a singer, he wrote most of his material during a time when it was not the norm for soul artists. He was among the first to openly speak about African American pride and struggle in his songs.
