It was the dawn on a day in early March that Mount St. Helen's, the 9,977 foot high "Jewel of the Cascades," first signaled its slow awakening after 123 years of silence. It all begins with a series of earthquakes that rock the mountain's core. Later, the local Sheriff (Tim Thomerson) reports other ominous portents. A young geologist, David Johnston (David Huffman) arrives the following day, realizes the danger, and is appalled by the blatant disregard for human life. He befriends Harry Truman (Art Carney), the feisty, colorful owner of the lodge at Spirit Lake. The Sheriff tries to calm everyone's fears, but the commercial concerns of tourism and lumber far outweight any fear of an exploding volcano.
