The legendary tale of Robin Hood made its debut on the big screen in the 1930s in a film starring Errol Flynn, eventually becoming a true television serial in 1955 called, The Adventures of Robin Hood. True to the legend's form, the television version of Robin Hood was developed around a hero from the twelfth century who robbed the rich to give to the poor. He, like the traditional Robin Hood, was flanked by a band called the Merry Men, who aided the prince of thieves in unburdening the wealth from the heavy purses of the affluent. The main premise of most of the half-an-hour television series revolved around Robin Hood's endess run-ins with the the Prince of Nottingham - the despised ruler of the land. The show starred Richard Greene as the precisely accurate archer Robin Hood; Bernadette O'Farrell (1955-1957) and Patricia Driscoll (1957-1958) as the lovely Maid Marian; Donald Pleasence as the villainous Prince of Nottingham; Alan Wheatley as the ill-fated sherrif; Alexander Gauge as Friar Tuck; and Archie Duncan and rufus Cruikshank as Little John, The show was so well received and the character so revered that an updated cartoon version of Robin Hood was produced in 1967, followed by a 1975 primetime series inspired by the original serial called, When Things Were Rotten. And more recently, in 1991, the film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves was released, featuring super-stars Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman.
