One of a series of similar material, the fourth volume in the Golden Classics collection consists mostly of acoustic work from the seminal Lightnin' Hopkins. The music in this series was recorded mainly in 1959 and 1960, just as the folk revival boom hit and white audiences discovered Hopkins's music. The songs here are all good, though listeners already familiar with Hopkins's style won't be surprised by anything they hear on this disc. From the acoustic ballad "Santa Fe Blues" (complete with obligatory railroad reference), to the uptempo, lighthearted "Little Wail," to the humorous story contained in "Big Car Blues," this is quintessential acoustic country-blues, Texas style. --Genevieve Williams
